London Underground’s Northern line extension – construction update

An occasional look at the works on the Northern line extension building the new London Underground line to Battersea Station.

Over the past few months, a structure has been emerging within the station box towards the west of site and has been built to house two ventilation units for the Northern Line Extension tunnels, emergency access stairs, mechanical and electrical equipment plus it forms part of the future phase 3B over site development.

Approximately 18 metres below existing ground level, basement level -3 is taking shape and starting to resemble a station as the platform has now been installed and the track has been laid.

Over in the crossover box, blockwork has commenced to form the rooms and corridors within the station and the maintenance stairs have now been installed at basement level – 2. This area will serve as the back of office for the future ticket hall and will therefore not be visible to the public once the station opens.

Over the next couple of months, the remaining over site development beams will be installed in the crossover box and the construction of ‘Prospect Way’ will commence.

They are currently working on the construction of the two storey building that will house the future ticket hall entrance to the station. The columns can now be seen emerging from ground level at the Wandsworth Road end of site.

The remainder of the works on the lower levels will entail blockwork, the application of ‘screed’, a layer of concrete added to the structural slabs to achieve the final architectural finish at each level plus MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) fit out.

The construction of the west superstructure will begin at the end of December.

More than half a kilometre of track has also been installed within the northbound tunnel, heading in the direction of Kennington. Once this section is complete, the process will be repeated in the southbound tunnel.

The head house will start to appear out of the ground from February 2019 and construction will continue to form the main structural frame.

First train to use the crossover between lines at Kennington

The Kennington Green site has undergone a major transformation since the summer in preparation for the construction of the headhouse. Excavation is complete and the team has successfully removed the secant piles which means that the shaft is now completely connected to the basement.

The basement level -2 and -1 floor slabs are now complete which will see the excavation start to close up. These floors will provide the space and various rooms required for all of the equipment which will be contained within the basement structure to operate the extension safely.

The future Kennington Green head house will start to appear out of the ground before Christmas and construction will continue into the early part of the new year to form the main structural frame.
